What Is a Group Grant?

Extracurricular Opportunity Program

A student group grant from the Michigan Youth Education Fund can help reduce the cost of participating in the academic, extracurricular activities you help organize!

Grant money can be used for...

  • Hotel Accommodations
  • Other Normal Expenses

Any Advisor

Any advisor, educator, or coach 18-years-old or older.

At a Michigan High School

Who is affiliated with a Michigan public, private, or charter high school.

Who Plans Activities for Groups

And who serves in an advisory role and plans/leads a student group’s activity.

Review

Review your student group’s eligibility and our guidelines for the group grant program. (You can review our guidelines and eligibility below)

Apply!

Complete and submit your application (aprox. 15-20 minutes). Make sure to be as thorough as possible and detail specific your organization’s specific financial need and use of grant funds.

Decision

Student group grants are considered once a year. The next application opens August 1, 2022 and closes September 30, 2022. Recipients will be notified October 14, 2022

Report

Upon completion of the student group grant, you will be required to report grant usage and other important information.

Restrictions
  1. Eligible Schools: Michigan public, private, or charter high school that is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as 501(c)(3), 509(a)(1), or Section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  2. Eligible Student Organizations: Active and registered student organizations of their high school that promote personal, professional, and educational development. 
  3. Eligible Applicants: Education professionals who are at least 18-years-old and serve in an advisory role of an eligible student organization at an eligible high school.

Student Group Application:

Application Opens: August 1, 2022

Application Closes: September 30, 2022

Grant Determination Date: October 14, 2022

The Application Review Committee (ARC) will review and evaluate all applications on the following criteria:

  • Financial need of students and student organization.
  • Benefits to students: including overall learning experience; personal, professional, and educational development; and overall community learning outcomes. 
  • Number of students who may benefit from the grant​.
  • Educational event description and purpose and relevance to the student group’s purpose. 
  • Proposed use of grant funds.
  • Applicants will be notified of grant determination by email on September 19, 2022. The grant agreement and acceptance package will be delivered within one week of notification. 
  • Recipients must follow instructions to verify their application information. 
  • Funds will be distributed to the students organization’s respective High School.

​By participating, entrants agree: 

  • To the rules and decisions of the Michigan Youth Education Fund (MiYEF), which shall be final in all respects;
  • Where legal, to the use of their names and/or likeness for advertising, promotional and publicity purposes without written consent or compensation; and
  • To release, discharge and hold harmless the Michigan Youth Education Fund from damages or claims arising out of their participation in the grant program or use of the grant. All rights, title and interest, including copyrights of information submitted as part of the application, belong to MiYEF. MiYEF reserves the right to edit, adjust, modify, abridge, condense, publish, and/or excerpt application information.
  • The Michigan Youth Education Fund is not responsible for electronic transmission errors resulting in omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operations or transmission, or for technical, network, telephone equipment, electronic, computer, hardware or software malfunctions of any kind or failure to receive entry information by the Application Review Committee
  • No emailed or hard copy paper applications will be accepted. The Michigan Youth Education Fund is not responsible for late, misdirected or incomplete applications or applications not received by the MiYEF. All applicant submissions become property of the MiYEF and will not be returned. By submitting an application, applicants agree to provide other information and documentation as may be reasonably requested by the Application Review Committee.
  • Applications will be judged by the Michigan Youth Education Fund’s Application Review Committee, whose decisions will be final in all respects.

The Michigan Youth Education Fund reserves the right to interpret these rules and to make decisions concerning grant funds, its acceptance and use, in situations not covered by these rules.

  1. Recipients may receive a grant only once in a given school year.
  2. Grant funds may only be used to cover costs normally attributed to students that are normal and reasonable. 
  3. In the event the costs and fees are less than the grant amount, the balance of the grant must be returned. 
  4. Grants may not be used to supplement expenditures that are the normal responsibility of the school district (e.g. substitute teacher salaries).
