What Is a Student Grant?

Extracurricular Opportunity Program

A student grant from the Michigan Youth Education Fund can help reduce the cost of participating in the extracurricular activities you are a part of!

Grant money can be used for...

Review

Apply!

Complete and submit your application (aprox. 15-20 minutes). Make sure to be as thorough as possible and ask a trusted adult for help is needed.

Decision

Student grants are considered on a rolling basis. Once the Application Review Committee has made a decision, you will be notified by email.

Report

After you participate in your extracurricular activity, follow the instructions to report your experience.

Students (18 years-old and younger) from an accredited Michigan High School (public, private, or charter school) that will be attending the educational experience in full as described in the application may apply. 

The application deadline for student grants shall be no later than four weeks before the scheduled event. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis as per the qualifying criteria. No application will be considered sooner than four weeks before the event. 

The grant program is managed and administered solely by the Michigan Youth Education Fund. The Application Review Committee (ARC) will evaluate all applications and award grants in an impartial fashion based on the following criteria:

  • Financial need
  • Benefits to the student, including overall student learning experience and broader impact on personal, professional, and educational development. 
  • Educational event description and purpose.

If selected to receive a grant, the applicant must provide verification, by the school superintendent, principal or immediate supervisor of the proposed trip and other information as requested.

Grant determinations shall be distributed approximately 2 weeks after submission. Grant recipients will be notified by email. Upon confirmation from your student organization’s advisor or school administration, funds will be distributed directly to your high school. In the event a recipient does not participate, the grant will be forfeited and funds returned to the Michigan Youth Education Fund. Any tax liability is that of the respective school district. 

​By participating, entrants agree: 

  1. To the rules and decisions of the Michigan Youth Education Fund, which shall be final in all respects;
  2. Where legal, to the use of their names and/or likeness for advertising, promotional and publicity purposes without written consent or compensation; and
  3. To release, discharge and hold harmless the Michigan Youth Education Fund from damages or claims arising out of their participation in the grant program or use of the grant. All rights, title and interest, including copyrights of information submitted as part of the application, belong to MiYEF. MiYEF reserves the right to edit, adjust, modify, abridge, condense, publish, and/or excerpt application information.
  4. The Michigan Youth Education Fund is not responsible for electronic transmission errors resulting in omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operations or transmission, or for technical, network, telephone equipment, electronic, computer, hardware or software malfunctions of any kind or failure to receive entry information by the MiYEF.
  5. No emailed or hard copy paper applications will be accepted. the Michigan Youth Education Fund is not responsible for late, misdirected or incomplete applications or applications not received by the MiYEF. All applicant submissions become property of the MiYEF and will not be returned. By submitting an application, applicants agree to provide other information and documentation as may be reasonably requested by the Application Review Committee (ARC).
  6. Applications will be judged solely by the Michigan Youth Education Fund and the Application Review Committee, whose decisions will be final in all respects.

No substitutions or transfers permitted. Recipients may receive an Educational Opportunity Student Grant only once in a given school year. Grants are to be used to cover field trip costs and fees. In the event the costs and fees are less than the grant amount, the balance of the grant must be returned. Grants may not be used to supplement expenditures that are the normal responsibility of the school district (e.g. substitute teacher salaries). The Michigan Youth Education Fund reserves the right to interpret these rules and to make decisions concerning the grant, its acceptance and use, in situations not covered by these rules.
